[ thatcher thinks: is she lying? who knows, but then he remembers her time working with them. hmm. ]
Good. It better be that way.
[ and if it is someone from their team, mark is safe at least. he isn't sure about seamus and james — actually, on the other hand, james would live for this. ]
I didn't survive this long just from being "paranoid."
'self-confidence' = 'experience dodging bullets from people you made mad'? yeah i guess you do have a little more of that than me vaquero. but fine you'll get your pic. once i find some place that sells novelty balloons around here.
[ what sends chills down her spine? ... Well, someone tossing out her real name just like that, for one, the mere mention sharp enough to cut through her drunken haze. How did Moira even find out? But even though they're not talking face-to-face, she's determined not to flinch at it. Better just to meet it head-on like it's no big deal. ]
it's sombra. otherwise i'm not sure what can excite a dead girl.
Don't forget that you're also supposed to be doing what Talon tells you.
[ It's more of a deflect than a real chastisement. Both he and Akande know Sombra does things her way or not at all. And if he's honest, he's not sure it's completely a bad thing. Still, he doesn't want to try fielding more questions that he would rather not think about. ]
[ it isn't the most graceful sidestep, but Sombra welcomes the shift. It allows her to find her own footing again. ]
did someone take out the rest of the council while i was away? or is everyone just suddenly interested in my bedtime now? relajate--i won't be late to tomorrow's briefing if that's what you're worried about. wouldn't want to embarrass you after all.
"Sure you wanna keep going? I won't say a word if you wanna throw in the towel." McCree has a hand resting on his next drink, giving his competition a ghost of a smirk as he awaits her answer. From her attitude, he doubts she'll take him up on the offer, but he figures he'll be a gentleman and put it out there. He doesn't want to see her be so stubborn that he spends the wee hours of the morning in the waiting room of a hospital as she gets her stomach pumped.
Sombra's answer is a grin. “Worried you'll end up losing, vaquero?” she replies. A flick of her wrist sends her emptied glass sliding towards the bartender who catches it in one gnarled hand, along with her glance and gesture to pour. Returning her attention to McCree, she leans back against the bar on her elbows. “It's Christmas Eve. If you're going to spend it in this place instead with family and friends, you might as well go all out, right?”
Her voice holds only light mockery, none of it directed at herself. She knows why she's here drinking, and it isn't because of wistful sentiment. But McCree? Maybe some alcohol and banter can tease his reasons out of him. And if not, well—at least she won't be bored.
[ more convenient, sure—but Sombra's never felt comfortable in that place. As a former black hat hacker now in CyberLife's employ, her past "indiscretions" with infiltrating government databases and systems are forgiven ( if not forgotten ) but that doesn't stop her from expecting someone to suddenly slap handcuffs on her each time she walks through those doors. ]
ok. see you soon.
[ about twenty minutes later, dressed in a dark hoodie and jeans and shouldering a backpack with her personal equipment, Sombra exits a cab in front of the DPD Central Station. She heads inside. A few minutes pass, and then: ]
hey do you mind coming to the front? apparently they can't verify my authorization. again.
why not? information's always in demand. i won't ever be out of a job as long as there's people who want to know things they're not supposed to. if they're willing to pay for it, that is. and if they want me to something major like changing an international bounty... that's gonna cost a lot. more than a guy who dresses like a cowboy can afford.
i ain't the brightest cowboy on the ranch but i know you've got plenty a'money. what are you really doin' this for? power? ... fun? aw, come on, honey. can't this one be on the house? not everything's gotta have a price tag -- 'specially the finer things in life, like favors for the most handsome man if your life. [ she can't see it, but he winks. ]
[ to much of Cloud's surprise, the job he and Sombra shared went off without a hitch. he had his worries and doubts — who wouldn't after giving their partner the impression that he was looking to cash in on her identity for a higher pay? he can't help but assume loyalty and allegiance are hardly of importance to her. not that he is one to judge. if they share any similarities, it would be that.
maybe the only reason she wanted to keep him from getting purged from existence is so she could find out more about the man that knew just enough to be a concern. that worked for him. it got them through it by the end of the day, and true to his word, he wanted to buy her a drink. Cloud fully expected to give her the intel she wanted, no care or regard for the client that could have been.
she's given him the GPS coordinates for the bar of her choosing, and it is no Seventh Heaven. it's as seedy and out of the eyes of the public as he could have expected. hopefully no one minds a guy with a huge sword making his way inside and towards the bar. the good thing about her providing that delightful selfie of hers is that he knew what to look for. considering her appearance, it wouldn't be difficult. there's a good chance she wiped that picture from his phone, but his memory is good enough for him to look for the unique features on the side of a buzzed head. ]
Hey.
[ don't mind him. he'll slide up in the nearest stool beside her, arms propped up on the bar counter. Cloud turns towards Sombra, and it's obvious he's getting a good look-over while he's at it. ]
Not gonna lie, thought you were going to send me out here on my own for a minute. Figure you like your pranks.
[ abrupt breaks in conversation and swells of muttering follow in Cloud's wake as he moves through the ill-lit room. It's less because of his sword—almost everyone in here is visibly armed with something—and more because he's a stranger. None of the patrons act on their suspicions, however, allowing Cloud to reach the bar without incident. Thanks to a row of dingy lamps hanging overhead, it's a little better illuminated, than the rest of the place, but there's still plenty of shadows for the sullen and drunk to sink into as they get closer to the bottom of their bottles.
Sombra is neither. A soft purple glow emanates from the cybernetic augments on her scalp and from the wiring on her gloves, unmistakable signs of her identity. Arms folded in front of her, she leans on the bar, her machine pistol tucked into a holster on her back. When Cloud approaches, she glances towards him and greets him with a smirk. ]
Sometimes. But I figured you've already done enough running around for one day. You're welcome, by the way.
[ she draws the bartender's attention by means of a two-fingered gesture made with the wordless ease of a regular. The man nods and leans down, reaching for glasses, liquor. Sombra waits until he's fully occupied with mixing her drink before turning her attention back to Cloud. ]
Maybe in addition to the drink, you can repay me by giving me the info up front?
[ the teasing tone to her voice makes her words much less serious than they sound; not even she wants to cut the evening so short. ]
got a couple of ideas. i'll decide on one of them soon. halloween's not that far away you know?
[ or maybe she doesn't have an idea at all and is just messing with him because she's a little drunk herself? tfw you invade other people's privacy for kicks. ]
huh. so does that mean you're the only one who's doing research about it? no offense but that sounds kinda selfish. not what i expected from you. :(
[ all her sources point to Lifeweaver having developed biolight himself while at Vishkar's Architech Academy, but not if he shared or taught it to anyone. It's actually been annoyingly difficult—even for her!—to access records of his time there, actually. Leave it to Vishkar to keep their failures like a brilliant student running off with "proprietary" tech locked up so tight. ]
Believe me, I'd love nothing better than to open this up for the entire scientific community. Imagine what we could achieve if we put all of our brilliant minds together! ✨
[ It's taking all of his virtually non-existent restraint not to do that. ]
But! Think about nuclear fusion. It was turned into a terrifying weapon, and even as an energy source it was awful!
[ ... ]
Is it better to be selfish or careless? What would YOU do in my place? 😕
sure. next time i see him. until then: try not to let him push you around ok? if you start talking about astrophysics or electromagnetism or whatever, i bet he'll get bored and wander off after a few minutes.
